A rock slide closed I-40 West near North Carolina-Tennessee border earlier today, but one lane has since reopened.
For the second time this year, a landslide has rendered impassable part of Interstate 40 near the Tennessee-North Carolina border.
All lanes of Interstate 40 West were closed at Cold Springs Creek Road in Haywood County, North Carolina, after a rock slide. The North Carolina Department of Transportation said one lane of I-40 West reopened, and was hopeful it the incident would be cleared before midnight.
The closure is about 7 miles east of the Tennessee state line.
“At this time, the road is expected to be closed indefinitely,” NCDOT said in an alert on its website. “Motorists are encouraged to seek an alternate route and avoid the area if possible.”
The landslide follows one in late February, which occurred about a half-mile away and stopped all traffic on I-40 near the state line. The interstate reopened after six days, but traffic was restricted to one lane in each direction for several weeks as crews worked to clear more than 10,000 tons of debris.
