If a commercial vehicle is oversize or overweight, a temporary oversize load permit (also known as a truck permit or wide load permit) is needed for it to legally travel on city and county roads. 

In Chicago, Illinois, oversize and overweight loads require permits from the Illinois Department of Transportation and the City of Chicago for travel on city streets and highways in Chicago. 

In most cases a load is considered an oversize load, or an oversize/overweight load in Chicago and requires a local municipality transportation permit when:

  • The load’s height exceeds  13’6” 
  • The load’s width exceeds 8’6″
  • The load’s length exceeds  80’0″
  • The load’s weight exceeds 80,000 pounds
  • Oversize loads exceeding 145′ long and 14’6″ wide are considered superloads and require additional permits and potentially escort vehicles (pilot cars)


Note that Chicago requires insurance to be on file before they will issue a permit. A WCS permit agent can assist with providing that when submitting a permit application.
