If a commercial vehicle is oversize or overweight, a temporary oversize load permit (also known as a truck permit or wide load permit) is needed for it to legally travel on New York city roads. 

In other words, when an oversize load leaves state jurisdiction and onto New York City roadways, a local New York City permit is required. 

In most cases a load is considered an oversize load, or an oversize/overweight load in New York City and requires a daily over-dimensional transportation permit for travel on New York City roadways when vehicle combinations (tractor plus trailer) exceed size and weight restrictions of:  

  • The load’s height exceeds 13’6″
  • The load’s width exceeds 8’0″
  • The load’s length exceeds 55’0″ bumper to bumper, tractor plus trailer


Other factors to keep in mind when obtaining a New York City oversize load permit:

  • New York City requires very specific/accurate information in regards to machinery as well as weights
  • New York City’s oversize permit department requires a minimum 48 hours advance notice
  • If an oversize load is over certain dimensions you must only travel at night


Vehicles must obtain a permit for each portion of the trip (example, one permit is needed to travel to a destination within the City and another is needed to travel back out).

Some oversize loads traveling through New York City may require pilot cars and a route survey. 

A Pilot car (1 escort) is required for New York City oversize loads if the load is over 10-6w or 65-0L. Two escorts are required if the load is over 14-0W, 14-0H, 100-0L, or 100K.

Surveys are required for New York City oversize loads if the load is 80-0L, 12-0W, 14-0H, or 120K.
