Baltimore Oversize Load Permits

If a commercial vehicle is oversize or overweight, a temporary oversize load permit (also known as a truck permit or wide load permit) is needed for it to legally travel on Baltimore city roads. 

In other words, when an oversize load leaves state jurisdiction and onto Baltimore city roadways, a local permit is required. 

In most cases a load is considered an oversize load, or an oversize/overweight load in Baltimore and requires a daily over-dimensional transportation permit for travel on Baltimore roadways when vehicle combinations (tractor plus trailer) exceed size and weight restrictions of:  

  • The load’s maximum gross weight exceeds 80,000 pounds
  • The load’s height exceeds 13’6″ **Note that 14’6″ in height requires a pole vehicle and route survey before a permit will be issued.
  • The load’s width exceeds 8’6″ (102 inches) **Note that any load extending more than 4 inches beyond the sides of any transport vehicle requires lamps and flags.**
  • The load’s length (indivisible) exceeds 70′. **Note flags and lamps are required for 4′ or more rear overhang**
  • A load requires a superload permit in Baltimore if over 150,000 gross weight with limitations on daytime and nighttime travel, including oversize holiday travel restrictions.

Other factors to keep in mind when obtaining a Baltimore city oversize load permit:

  • Travel time: loads up to and including 200,000 GVW, 13’11” wide, 14’6″ high or 120′ lon may move 24/7
  • If 14′ wide or more, travel is limited to 9 a’.m 0 3:30 p.m. on any highway in Maryland, including Baltimore highways.

Some oversize loads traveling through Baltimore city may require pilot cars, a route survey and specific signage and flags. 

Pilot Cars

  • A Pilot car (1 escort) is required in Baltimore if the load is over 13′ wide (unless the load is a manufactured housing unit), more than or 85′ long, 14’6″ high or more (pole vehicle is also required).
  • Two escorts are required if the load is over 14′ wide or 140′ long.

Surveys

  • A route survey is required in Baltimore for oversize load exceeding 14’6″ high.

Equipment

  • Loads over 8’6″ wide require lamps (lights) and flags.
