The detour is 74 miles, and it is advised to plan ahead. Officials estimate the detour can take over an hour. Carriers, drivers and oversize load dispatchers are advised to plan ahead.

Although access for local traffic will be maintained by flagging and temporary signage, oversize loads would typically not have room to fit within the one lane along the detour.

The Missouri River Bridge links Decatur, Nebraska to Onawa, Iowa. The 60-year-old bridge will gain 20 – 30 years of life span after repairs have been completed. Both states will share the costs.

During the bridge crossing closure, local traffic would have access on both N-51 and I-175, but the bridge crossing would not be accessible.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation does state, prior arrangements for oversize load travel could be made by contacting the District 3 Office at (402) 370-3470, although no additional information is available at this time.

The closure is planned for August and September at an attempt to avoid disrupting harvest season.
