Caltrans now allows electronic versions of a transportation permit and any required accompaniment issued via their online system.

On September 10, 2019, the State of California – Department of California Highway Patrol issued a bulletin highlighting the change effective immediately.

Most oversize/overweight permits can be issued electronically via their online system – STARS2/RCATS. Any permits not issued by this system, including all variance permits and permits exceeding 11 axles, cannot legally be displayed on an electronic device. These permits must be printed and in a driver’s possession.

WCS has a number of permit agents that are savvy with STARS2/RCATS and work in the program daily.

The majority of states now allow electronic versions of permits and any required permit provisions. The full list of states with their rule on electronic permits can be found on the WCS website here.

The full bulletin issued by the state highlighting the Caltrans change can be viewed online now.
