OS/OW Permit Changes in Indiana

OS/OW Permit Changes in Indiana

The state of Indiana has released information on an important update to the validity periods for single-trip Oversize/ Overweight (OSOW) Permits. These changes are part of Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 179 (2026), which amends Indiana Code (IC) 9-20-6-2 and takes effect July 1, 2026

What Is Changing?

Effective July 1, 2026, the following validity periods will apply to all newly issued single-trip OSOW permits:

  • Standard single-trip permits will be valid for five days from the date of issuance.
  • If the permitted vehicle and load require a law enforcement escort, the permit will be valid for 10 days from the date of issuance.

These changes are specifically outlined in Section 16 of SEA 179 amending IC 9-20-6-2(c)(1).

Note: These updates only apply to single-trip permits. Other permit durations (30 days, 90 days, or annual) remain unchanged.

Operational Reminder

Operational hours remain restricted to one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, as stated in IC 9-20-6-2(b).

These updated validity periods apply to all single-trip OSOW permits issued on or after July 1, 2026.
