I-5 bridge collapse update

According to investigators, a second truck is being sought in the investigation of the I-5 bridge collapse over the Skagit River in Washington state.

On May 23, a 160-foot section of the bridge collapsed after a commercial truck carrying an oversize load  struck a girder on the north section of the four-lane bridge near Mount Vernon, 60 miles north of Seattle. Now, authorities believe a second commercial truck may also be linked to the accident.

It is being speculated the commercial vehicle which struck the bridge veered left and may have struck a second commercial vehicle.

The oversize load was hauling a housing for drilling equipment to Vancouver, Wash, and had a permit to carry the load across the bridge. An escort was also assisting in navigating the load.

The bridge is expected to reopen mid-month and full repairs can cost up to $15 million, according to the state Transportation Department.

Detours are still in place by the Washington Transportation Department, and is recommending state Routes 20 and 9.

The investigation is still ongoing, and it was said the bridge was inspected twice last year and repairs were made.
