Christmas & New Year’s Oversize Travel Restrictions & Closures

The state Department of Transportation (DOT) offices have released their Christmas (Monday, Dec. 25, 2017) and New Year’s Day (Monday, Jan. 1, 2018) holiday oversize load travel restrictions and permit office closures. While most states’ information is out, some states will release new info, make changes and/or updates between now and Christmas Eve. 

WCS is committed to continually updating this closure list to keep all up-to-date on changes and updates, but each changes may be made by states without notice to WCS and it is urged that all state blanket holiday restrictions are checked, as well as annual Christmas & New Year's Oversize Travel Restrictionspermits. 

Key Closures & Restrictions

While most state permit offices are closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day – Monday, Dec. 25 and Monday, Jan. 1 – there are some states with closures the day after Christmas on Tuesday, Dec. 26 and the day after New Year’s on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Some states, such as California, only instate oversize travel restrictions when a pilot car is required. 

There are only a few states, including Colorado, Idaho and Kansas which list no travel restrictions. A decent percentage of states only list closures on the actual holiday – both Christmas and New Year’s Day.
