Canadian Christmas & New Year’s Oversize Travel Restrictions

On Christmas & New Year’s Day in Canada, observed on Wednesday, December 25, 2024 and Wednesday, January 1, 2025, some provinces have oversize load travel restrictions in place prior to, after and on each holiday.

ALBERTA

CHRISTMAS:

No travel allowed if over 3.85m wide from 3 pm on 12/24 and all day 12/25 and 12/26. Normal restrictions apply to Friday, 12/27.

NEW YEARS:

No travel after 3 pm on 12/31, and no travel on 1/1/25.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

CHRISTMAS:

No travel allowed if over 31.0m long or 3.80m wide after 3:30 pm on 12/24 – 12/25 based on size. Refer to the attached restrictions in your permit quoting your specific dimensions and area of travel for specific restrictions on your load.

NEW YEARS:

No travel after 3:30 pm on the 12/31, and no travel on 1/1/25.

SASKATCHEWAN

CHRISTMAS:

No travel allowed if over 3.85m wide, 42m long, or 9m / 12’7 wide after 3 pm on 12/24, after noon on 12/25, and after noon on 12/26. Regular travel restrictions apply to travel on Friday, 12/27.

NEW YEARS:

No travel after 3 pm on 12/31, and after noon on 1/1/25.

MANITOBA

CHRISTMAS:

If over 3.40m wide on 2‐lane highways, 3.70m wide on 4‐lane highways, or over 26m long, no travel after 4 pm on 12/24, and no travel after noon on 12/25.

NEW YEARS:

No travel after 4 pm on 12/31 and no travel on 1/1/25. 

ONTARIO

CHRISTMAS:

Under annual dimension permit: No travel allowed after Noon on 12/25. 

Over annual dimensions of 3.7m Wide or 25m long: No travel allowed after noon on 12/24 & no travel allowed on 12/25 and 12/26.

NEW YEARS:

No travel allowed after noon on 12/31, and no travel on 1/1/25.

QUEBEC

CHRISTMAS and NEW YEARS:

No travel allowed on 12/25 or on 1/1/25.

NEW BRUNSWICK

CHRISTMAS:

No travel after 3 pm on 12/24 and after noon on 12/25 and 12/26 if over 3.65m wide and/or 30m long. 

NEW YEARS:

No travel after 3 pm on 12/31 & after noon on 1/1/2025 if over 3.65m wide and/or 30m long. Refer to permits for specific restrictions regarding your load.

NEWFOUNDLAND

CHRISTMAS:

No travel allowed if over 3.65m wide after 3:00pm on 12/24 until sunrise the 12/27, unless otherwise stated on permit 

NEW YEARS:

No travel allowed if over 3.65m wide after 3:00pm on 12/31 until sunrise the 1/2/2025, unless otherwise stated on permit

NOVA SCOTIA

CHRISTMAS:

No travel after 3 pm on 12/24.  No travel allowed after noon 12/25 unless otherwise stated on your permit.

NEW YEARS:

No travel after 3 pm on 12/31, and no travel on 1/1/25. 

PLEASE REFER TO YOUR PERMIT CONDITIONS TO KNOW WHICH RESTRCTIONS YOU FALL UNDER WITH YOUR DIMENSIONS.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

No special travel restrictions. Daylight travel only, PLEASE CHECK PERMIT CONDITIONS.

NWT and the YUKON

No special travel oversize load travel restrictions are in place.
