California I-10 Closure / Bridge Collapse

Update 7/22/15: I-10 is scheduled to open Friday, 7/24 at noon with one lane in each direction.

A stretch of both the eastbound and westbound I-10 in Desert Center, California was closed after bridge damage was caused by heavy rain and flooding on Sunday.

I-10 Freeway Closed Due to Bridge Collapse“Interstate 10 is closed completely and indefinitely,” said Terri Kasinga, spokeswoman for the California Department of Transportation, on Monday.

The closure — just under a 50-mile stretch along the Mojave Desert between Palm Springs and the Arizona state line — was caused by a damaging flash flood which washed out the bridge on Sunday afternoon.

According to authorities, the collapse left one driver injured, while stranding numerous motorists and complicating travel for thousands.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is reporting the I-10 westbound as closed in western Arizona near Quartzsite at State Route 95, and is advising all drivers including those carrying oversize loads to plan ahead.

Westbound I-10 drivers will be detoured to State Route 95 through Friday. Drivers traveling to Southern California may take SR 95 south to Interstate 8 and then travel west to California.
