Annual Permit Authorization: Routes Are Required in Some States

Many carriers don’t realize that in several states, annual permits are only valid if an approved route has also been submitted and authorized.

In fact, more than 50% of states now require route authorization as part of the annual permit process.

If you travel without the required route authorization, your permit may be considered invalid — meaning your load is not being transported legally.

That becomes a serious issue if an accident occurs. Operating outside permit requirements can create major liability exposure and may even jeopardize insurance coverage because the load was not legally permitted at the time of transport.

This is one of the most misunderstood compliance issues in oversize and overweight transportation. Carriers often assume that once they have the annual permit, they are fully covered — but in certain states, route approval is a mandatory part of the permit process.

Before moving any permitted load, make sure you verify:

  • Whether the state requires route authorization with annual permits
  • That your route has been properly submitted and approved
  • That the route matches the actual path being traveled
