The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will close the Interstate 83 South bridge starting at 9 p.m. Dec. 15 so a contractor can perform multiple repairs, weather permitting. The bridge is expected to reopen no later than 6 a.m. Dec. 18.

A detour will be in place during the closure:
- To access southbound I-83 from north of the northern terminus of I-83, drivers should take southbound Interstate 81 to eastbound Route 581 to southbound I-83.
- To access southbound I-83 from points south of Interstate 81, including Interstate 283, Route 322 and entry points along the I-83 corridor north of the closure in the Harrisburg area, drivers should take northbound I-83 to southbound I-81 to eastbound Route 581 to southbound I-83.
PennDOT said the closure may cause congestion along the detour route and adjacent roadways. Motorists, including commercial drivers, should be aware of the congestion and drive with caution if moving through the area.
Work includes expansion joint repairs, concrete deck repairs, and seal replacements, according to PennDOT.
