Posted Road Restrictions begin Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at 12:01 AM CST for Spring Thaw (except WIS 54 and WIS 173 in Wood County). The Frozen Road period ended and Class II Restrictions began statewide Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 12:01 AM CST.
Class II roads include about 1,400 miles of state highways susceptible to damage from heavy trucks during the spring thaw period as frost leaves the ground. More information regarding frozen road declarations, Class II roadways, and roadway postings can be found on WisDOT’s website under “Weight Restriction Programs.”
Restrictions on travel include:
1. Suspension of most divisible load permit types on all state highways for the duration of the spring thaw period. Exceptions are raw forest products at 98,000 lbs. (RS) and potato seed (PS) permits.
Divisible load permits AC, AG, AgCMV, FF, FMP, GR, IoH, IPD, MI, PB, PS, RF or RS.
2. Travel under annual non-divisible permits becomes more difficult because holders of overweight annual permits must avoid the Class II roads.
Non-divisible load permits AA, BM, CM, CS, GG, HM, HRCQ, II, MH, SB, SM, or SS.
3. Restrictions on maximum weight allowed for single-trip movement over Class II roads.
4. Travel with single-trip or annual non-divisible overweight permits is not restricted on local or state roads in Milwaukee County or any part of the Interstate Highway System. In the remainder of the state, travel is not restricted under non-divisible annual permits on Class I roadways.

Seasonal Posted Roads Restrictions
Posted roadway sections are too weak to withstand even the legal load limit (80,000 pounds) during the seasonal freezing and thawing period. These highway sections have signs posted indicating the allowable weight limits during the period normally from the second week in March till late April or early May also known as Spring Thaw. All permit types are affected on these road segments.
