Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) FAQs

Standard carrier alpha codes (SCAC)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WCS Permits & Pilot Cars can help apply for, renew or reinstate Standard Carrier Alpha Codes™ (SCAC®). Here are some SCAC related frequently asked questions and answers.

What is standard carrier alpha code?

Standard Carrier Alpha Codes® (SCAC™) is a unique two-to-four letter coding system used to identify transportation companies.

Who needs SCAC?

Companies that move freight or provide transportation services are required to have an active SCAC number.

SCAC numbers are required when doing business with all U.S. Government agencies and with many commercial shippers including those in the automotive, petroleum, forest products, and chemical industries. HazMat, intermodal container, rail yard, and import/ export loads usually require that you have SCAC. You will need a SCAC to register with e-modal to enter many of the seaports, most notably Baltimore.

What is SCAC used for?

These unique codes help connect transportation providers with shipping processes. They show up on important documents like bills of lading and booking confirmations. These codes help supply chain systems choose the right carrier for shipments, improving communication and reducing errors in logistics.

How do you apply for SCAC?

The newest version of the SCAC application is now live for WCS Permit customers to quickly apply online, giving you the convenience you need, when you need it. Applying, renewing, and managing your SCAC has never been easier.

How long does it take to get SCAC after applying?

Once we have a full application submission, we typically get SCAC back in approximately 48 hours.

How long are SCAC good for?

SCAC is good for 1 year, you will need to renew your SCAC annually.
