The Rhode Island Department Transportation (RIDOT) announced it will be closing two lanes on Interstate 95 South near Exit 34 during two weekends in September for the “rapid replacement” of the Elmwood Avenue Bridge.
The closures will occur during the weekends of Sept. 13 and Sept. 20. and will begin at 8 p.m. on Fridays, with all lanes expected to be open by 5 a.m. Monday morning.
The work will also include the full closure of Elmwood Avenue at the I-95 overpass as well as lane splits beginning on Sept. 11.
RIDOT is advising travelers, especially heavy truck drivers hauling freight and oversize loads, to use alternate routes such as Route 10 and Interstate 295 on both weekends.
The work schedule will be as follows:
Sept. 11: Lane split on I-95 South beginning before the Elmwood Avenue off-ramp (Exit 34) with two lanes on either side of the split. All lanes go through. It also will be in effect through Sept. 13.
Sept. 13-16: The two left lanes on I-95 South and the left lane on I-95 North will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. Friday night Also, Elmwood Avenue will be closed at the bridge. All lanes reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
Sept. 16-20: Lane split on I-95 South beginning before the Elmwood Avenue off-ramp (Exit 34) with two lanes on either side of the split. All lanes go through.
Sept. 20-23: The two right lanes on I-95 South and the left lane on I-95 North will be closed beginning at 8 p.m. Friday night. Also, Elmwood Avenue will be closed at the bridge. All lanes reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
This is part of the state’s 15 Bridges Project which is concentrated around I-95 and Route 10.
The project will take a major step in addressing the I-95 corridor holistically, to encourage the safe movement of almost 200,000 vehicles and $9.7 billion in freight. About 9,000 trucks and heavy freight vehicles use this corridor, which includes hospitals, businesses and universities, daily.
