In California, here is when you need a trip & fuel permit:

  • If your vehicle is greater than 26,000 lbs. GVW, greater than 2 axles or with trailer
  • If you’re operating a power unit with three or more axles regardless of weight, including buses

Commercial vehicle IRP Requirements: - Greater than 26,000 lbs. GVW
- Greater than 2 axles, or with trailer
Commercial Vehicle IFTA Requirements: - Greater than 26,000 lbs. GVW
- Greater than 2 axles, or with trailer

RV/SME IRP Requirements: Must purchase a RV/SME if a towed vehicle with a dealer tag, a
IRP is not required

Notes IRP/IFTA Regulations:- CA based carriers with a GVW greater than 26,000 lbs.
Must have a CA Fuel permit to return to CA. If a return CA fuel
permit is not obtained the carrier can be subject to fines.
