AR Will Not Allow 46,000 on Tandems for 30 More Days

The state of Arkansas was set to increase the maximum allowable weight on a permitted tandem-axle group combination from 40,000 to 46,000 pounds on December 17, however according to Arkansas state transportation officials the increase will not go into effect for 30 more days.

Drivers will also be allowed to carry and display permits electronically on screens with at least seven-inch displays. Arkansas increase cap for tandems to 46,000-pound not effective for 30 more days

The SC&RA Permit Policy Committee worked closely with Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department to push through both changes. According to the SC&RA, this change will allow for more effective transportation along the north and south transportation corridor from the Midwest to Gulf State ports.

Once this change is effective, Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska and Tennessee will be the only remaining states with a tandem maximum weight of 40,000 pounds.

Carrying and displaying oversize/overweight load permits electronically will provide convenience for those drivers who use a smart phone, tablet or laptop to conduct business. Some smart phones on the market have a seven-inch or larger display.
