Standard Carrier Alpha Codes™ (SCAC®Numbers) is a unique two-to-four letter coding system used to identify transportation companies, and WCS Permits & Pilot Cars can help carriers, brokers and more quickly apply and obtain an SCAC®number.

More About SCAC Numbers

SCAC® numbers are used to track shipments, particularly in international and intermodal shipping. They are also used in electronic data interchange (EDI) transaction sets, such as the 856 Advance Ship Notice and the 850 Purchase Order.

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) assigns SCAC® numbers for all companies except those codes used for identification of freight containers not operating exclusively in North America, intermodal chassis and trailers, non-railroad owned rail cars, and railroads.

Let WCS Permits Obtain Your SCAC®

WCS Permits has the authority to apply for SCAC®numbers on behalf of any carrier, broker, freight forwarder and more. The application process starts on the WCS Permits’ Standard Carrier Alpha Codes online page, and from there a WCS Permits’ transportation agent will process the application.

Once a customer uses WCS Permits to obtain an SCAC®number on their behalf, they can use WCS in the future to renew or reinstate a code. If an SCAC®expires, reinstatement is required within three years. 

The newest version of the SCAC® application is now live for WCS Permit customers to quickly apply online, providing every customer with the ability to conveniently apply on their own time. Applying, renewing, and managing your SCAC® has never been easier.

After WCS applies for the SCAC®, it takes approximately 48 hours for the code to be issued, which are valid for 12 months and expire one year from the date of issuance.
