Last week, the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) submitted an application to the Federal
Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for an exemption from the 30-minute rest break provision for oversize/overweight load haulers.
The current 2013 Hours of Service Rule states drivers must take a 30-minute break within the first eight hours of driving.
According to the SC&RA, this rule is hard for drivers to follow due to some state revia online travel time restrictions on oversize/overweight loads, and poses a threat to public safety when drivers have to park their loads alongside highways or exit ramps.
The organization does not believe the requested exemption will negatively impact the safety of drivers.
FMCSA will be accepting public comment on the application for 30 days (on or before December 24, 2014) before a decision is made. Public comments can be submitted here.
