The state of Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will make some major changes to permit fees, length of permits and permit travel allowances during specific days and times effective July 1.
State permit fees will increase to $30 plus a per ton/mile fee for all overweight loads greater than 14’0″ feet, but not greater than 16’0″ feet. 
Any loads greater than 16’0″ feet will be charged an additional $5 for each additional foot or fraction thereof  greater than 16’0″ feet.
Additionally, houseboats greater than 17’0″ feet will be charged $2,500 plus an additional $100 for each additional inch or fraction thereof greater than 17’0″ feet.
The initial overweight fee prior to July 1 had been $20 plus a per ton/mile fee for all loads greater than 14’0″ feet.
Other major changes in oversize load travel will also take effect July 1 in the state, including 24 hours a day/seven days a week permit travel up to 16 feet wide; 15 feet 6 inches high; 120 feet long; and 165,000 pounds, an increase in the annual permit weight allowance to 165,000 pounds, the increase of the valid length of single trip permits to 10 days, the increase of the maximum length of movement not requiring an escort to 90 feet and the reduction of holiday travel restrictions.
According to the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA), these changes are a result of TDOT working toward increasing the performance of its automated permit system and becoming one of the most efficient states moving oversize/overweight loads.
Another change will take effect January 1, 2017 when the permitted weight allowance increases from 40,000 to 46,000 pounds for all two-axle tandems in which the tractor/trailer equipment does not exceed 12 feed in width.
